Dear Arlington Community Members,
Welcome to Arlington Community High School, home of the Mavericks, and an excellent place to learn. We are an alternative high school for students aged 16 and older and offer all classes required for a high school diploma. As part of APS, our goal is to provide all students a safe, supportive environment where they can learn and thrive. We are an inclusive community that empowers all students to foster their dreams, explore their possibilities, and create their futures. Our vision is to have every student become an Empowered Graduate.
Our mission is to make graduation possible for every student. We want to find a way to support every student to graduate with their high school diploma and possibly college credits through our dual-enrollment opportunities with Northern Virginia Community College. Our classes are offered in both the day (semester classes) and the evening (full-year classes), and we use a competency-based approach to learning: when you show you know the content of the course, you can earn the credit.
As an educator for more than 40 years, I understand how vital it is to focus on the social-emotional well-being of all students, in addition to academic excellence. In my 15th year as principal at Arlington Community, I am dedicated to ensuring you and your family feels at home at our school and am here to answer any questions you may have.
We look forward to an outstanding 2019-2020 school year and empowering every student – Go Mavericks!
Sincerely, Dr. Barbara Thompson
