Students are identified as English (Language) Learners in APS from Levels 1-4, 6. These students receive their core instruction (reading, language arts, social studies, science and math) from an EL teacher. Students may enroll in equivalent math or general education mathematics courses, as well as physical education and elective classes.
EL strives to foster the success of English language learners across all educational settings and courses. EL students at higher levels of study may receive instruction from either an EL teacher and/or a general education teacher, depending on EL level, in grade appropriate classes for reading/language arts, social studies, science, physical education and electives.
Students exit the EL program based on criteria such as passing criterion-referenced tests, writing samples, Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) tests, and class performance.
